Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting

On Monday evening, September 10th at 6:30pm, Commissioner Meyers will be hosting an inaugural meeting of the Precinct 3 Citizens Advisory Committee at Cinco Ranch Branch Library to discuss proposed legislation that will allow residents to petition out of Houston’s extra-territorial jurisdiction. Currently, Houston’s ETJ extends as far west as 1463 and as far south as FM 359. Houston has regulatory and taxing authority in their ETJ, and they collect approximately $15 million per year in sales taxes, which they split with the municipal utility districts. Houston has made it clear that they will only spend this money inside city limits, and not on you. We find this unacceptable and are working to change this.

Our goal is to give residents the right of self-determination. Houston has not, and will not, annex this area for a multitude of political and financial reasons, yet they continue to tax our residents and remove millions of dollars through sales taxes every year. We want this taxation without representation to end and for YOU, the resident to have the ability to choose whether you stay in their ETJ, become wholly unincorporated, or join/form another city. Until you have the right to choose your own form of civic government, Houston will not release the area and will continue to extend their hand inside Fort Bend County.

Commissioner Meyers will go over the history of Houston’s ETJ, the City’s continued push to collect more money from you, and our plan to give you self-determination. We will educate you on our legislation, how to advocate, and how to organize for the 2019 legislative session. The legislature needs to hear from you en masse on this issue as we expect strong push back from Houston and the Texas Municipal League.

If you are interested in joining us, we will be meeting at the Cinco Ranch Library from 6:30-8 pm and we will provide dinner as well. If you’re interested in joining this effort, please sign up via this form.
